Chapter 19

Ming was a master of not showing any emotion on his face. But his body language spoke loudly. He wasn’t too happy that his father was sending him on a mission with a black man, a man they only knew by the name Simon. He’d been given the chance to prove himself to Tao, and so Ming was given the responsibility of overseeing him and his actions. They sat quietly together in the front seat of a Rolls-Royce. Words hadn’t been exchanged. Every once in a while, Ming glimpsed over at him. All he could think about was that the men who killed his uncle Shen were black.

“You don’t like me very much, do you?” Simon finally broke the silence as he drove.

“What would make you think that?” Ming asked, unable to mask the sarcasm in his voice.

“You aren’t doing a good job of hiding it,” Simon told him with his eyes out the window.

Ming stared at him for a few moments and tried to read him. He was a calm man, confident. He didn’t seem like the kind of person who let things get to him. But somehow he’d found himself entangled in a war that had nothing to do with him.

“I don’t know you enough to dislike you. However, I don’t like certain men who look like you.”

“Look like me?” Simon asked, glancing at him. Ming pointed at the skin on his arm. “Oh, you mean black like me. I forget that you and the whites think we’re all the same person.”

“It might be a wrong observation.”

“It is a wrong observation. Some might call it racist.”

“I am no racist!” Ming snapped and then relaxed himself. “They killed my uncle. And when I’m done with them, I’ll throw their bodies in the ocean just like I did Marco’s.”

“We share the same hate. But I don’t blame you for feeling a way about me. Like you said, you don’t know me, and I look like the men who you’re at war with. But just know they’re on my hit list too.”

“That’s what my father told me. What I don’t understand is, what for? If I understand correctly, you are not even from New York. You have no reason to fight for the territories.”

“And that’s where you’re wrong. Boogie Tolliver ripped my home apart by killing the kingpin, my brother. He killed my nephew, too. And like you I’m used to living a certain kind of lifestyle. I refuse to go back to fighting over scraps. So I’m going to help your father get what he wants. In return, Boogie dies and I get Brooklyn.”

“How do we know we can trust you?” Ming asked curiously.

“You should never trust a man at face value. Trust is earned, not given, and I’m about to earn your trust right now,” Simon said and pointed out the window. “The moment I left from meeting with your father, I started following Boogie. He moves around like there isn’t a price on his head. He’s a bold man, but that worked in my favor.
